What is Stabismus

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes or squint, is a condition where the eyes do not align properly and point in different directions. It can affect one or both eyes and may be constant or intermittent.

How to Check for Strabismus
  • Observe your child's eyes: Look for any misalignment, whether the eyes turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. Notice if the misalignment is constant or happens only occasionally.
  • Cover test: Cover one eye and observe if the uncovered eye moves to fixate on an object. Repeat with the other eye. Any movement of the uncovered eye indicates a possible misalignment.
  • Light reflex test: Shine a light into your child's eyes and observe the reflection of the light on the cornea (the clear front part of the eye). If the reflection is not centered in the same spot on both eyes, it may indicate strabismus.
  • Consult an ophthalmologist: If you suspect strabismus, it's crucial to see a pediatric ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye exam and diagnosis.
